I was really running out of dramas to watch so I randomly chose one that I had avoided before, When I See You Again. When it first came out I was excited because Jasper Liu was in it. But I take casting pretty seriously as you may be able to tell and so when I saw the preview for this drama and saw they had cast Mandy Wei as the lead I was a bit disappointed. The way she portrayed her role was a bit cringe worthy, she was overacting. Her character, An Xi, is a bit naive sometimes and Mandy just seems a bit too old to be acting that way. And I totally support any woman with a resting bitch face but it didn’t fit her character this time.
Either way I went ahead and watched it out of boredom. I think Mandy improved a good amount throughout the show. She still has a long way to go but I think I wouldn’t mind watching another one of her dramas after this one. Her character became more bearable after awhile and it was very enjoyable to see An Xi and Xia You Qian’s (Jasper Liu) relationship gradually develop. I think it’s funny how An Xi couldn’t tell who You Qian was. I know he looked like a total geek when they were friends but still recognizable… Anyway that’s just a thought. I wish they could have touched upon on how You Qian developed his amazing skills at analyzing them by noticing their every move. It was a huge transition from what he used to be.
It was really sweet to see You Qian unable to deny his feelings for An Xi and let go of his grudge to be with her. No matter how bitter he was to her, in the end he still had a huge soft spot for her needs and wellness. What I really enjoyed as the fact that their relationship stood strong even with a few antagonists that wanted to take them apart or ruin You Qian’s life. I feel like a bunch of dramas have a bunch unnecessary events where the second girl always always sets up the main couple to tear them apart. Hu Yong Qing (Ivy Shao) was a bitch in the drama, but she was definitely much better than a lot of the antagonists in other dramas.
Hu Yan Zhe’s (Jet Chao) with Zhang Ya En (Zeng Yun Rou) was sort of odd to me. She just felt way too young for him to be hanging around with. I like how she helped him get over the darkness inside him but the way she acted was like a high school kid and he definitely passed as late twenties. I think this drama needs to sort of reassess the ages An Xi and Ya En are supposed to be portrayed as. They both act younger than their actual characters would normally act.
