太子妃升職記 Go Princess Go

Ohh man, it’s been awhile since I’ve had such a good laugh. It’s a wonder to me as to why such a low budget drama can be so much better than many high budget ones! The challenge in money definitely pushed them through creative boundaries! I actually started to watched this drama because of someone’s recommendation on WordPress. Go Princess Go is probably the more unconventional period dramas you will find with actors and actresses you probably never heard of. It challenges and pokes fun at a lot of cliches. Go Princess Go has the same scenario where someone travels back in time and wakes up as someone from thousands of years ago. However this time, it’s a womanizing man being transferred into the body of a gorgeous woman who us engaged to the crowned princess. Zhang Peng, a playboy from 2015, while trying to save someone drowning, becomes Zhang Peng Peng (Crystal Zhang), the woman who is engaged to the crowned prince thousands of years back in time.

Unlike the typical gender bender (?) Zhang Peng Peng is not interested in vying for the affections of the crowned prince and loves flirting around with the woman in the kingdom. She(he?) even goes as far as defending the mistress of her husband. I must say Crystal Zhang is an amazing actress. She has an array of expressions and despite how beautiful she is, she makes a very convincing man who is living inside a woman’s body. There’s the way she moves and way she talks that makes the viewer crack up really hard and see her past her flower vase face. I especially love it when Peng Peng has a monologue as Zhang Peng. It helps her keep her male identity and is also hilariously funny because the things he says as someone from 2015 will think about in an ancient era is very different the things you normally see they say when someone goes back to the past i.e Ruo Xi from Bu Bu Jing Xing and Qing Chuan from Gong.

The crowned prince is Qi Sheng (Sheng Yi Lun) who is cold to everyone and having an affair with the wife of one of his brothers. After Zhang Peng Peng becomes Zhang Peng, Qi Sheng begins to develop an interest for her, curious about her sudden change. He warms up to her and begins to like her but is constantly upset because she keeps pushing him away (since she’s actually Zhang Peng). I think Sheng Yi Lun is an okay actor, it’s hard to judge his acting when his character is a cold block of ice who has very few expressions.

I haven’t finished this drama yet but I must say their unusual, low budget set and costume design is really beautiful and the designers did a really great job. They often wear modern clothes which have been slightly altered or accessorized to make it believable that the setting is thousands of years ago. It’s really funny when a lot of the men prance around wearing shorts and showing off their legs when you NEVER are able to get even a glimpse of them in regular period dramas.

Somehow I think because this drama is on a low budget, there are less risks, and therefore they can be more creative and unconventional everything including the story. Their low budget situation is actually what helps set them apart from all the other period dramas. Like how often do you come across a princess who acts like Zhang Peng Peng? Crystal Zhang who I’ve never heard of before is a lot more interesting to watch than Liu Shi Shi. How is it that I’m able to sit through 20+ episodes of Go Princess Go, but I could barely hold five episodes of Imperial Doctoress who stars a very boring but famous Liu Shi Shi?

Anyway if you want a nice breathe of fresh air, I really suggest Go Princess Go!
