Highly, highly recommend 愛上哥們 Bromance! Although this Taiwanese drama is really unrealistic and maybe not filmed in the best way, BUT it is really enjoyable to watch and just makes you want to keep watching. Gender benders always have some comical aspect to them. I’m not sure if there’s a clear plot yet but so far the first four episodes have been fun to watch and things are starting to kick off. If feels like the script is purposely written so strangely, I hope it’s that and not just the sceen writer’s style, a little bit awkward. What’s helping it I think is that fact that all the characters seem to be hiding something and it just makes the viewer want to know. The cast they chose is pretty good although I think Bii has a bit way to go in acting. Megan Lai as Pi Ya Nuo totally passes as a really pretty guy. It’s also quite funny how Pi Ya Nuo’s life until now was determined by some fortune teller before she was even born.
One thing that has been strange is the pace of the drama. The way Du Zi Feng (Baron Chen) goes out of his way to include Pi Ya Nuo into his life is really weird and unnatural because he was like that from a start. I understand she saved him and what not but it’s just awkward how they became sworn brothers just like that. I feel like someone of his status would probably be suspicious if someone just entered his life, saving him and his sister in the same day. He grew really attached really quickly, inviting Pi Ya Nuo out to their family events and what not. Surprisingly though, Du Zi Han, Du Zi Feng’s sister (Tao Man Man), isn’t really annoying to me. I would usually feel bothered by her role but it’s actually quite entertaining to watch her character crush on Pi Ya Nuo and become jealous of her own brother. Although she’s like a princess, she isn’t really that mean to people.
Wei Qing Yang (Bii) on the other hand is sort of dry. Bii has a straight face pretty much all the time as this character. I understand he’s supposed to be sort of introverted and cool but it’s rather unnatural, could be because Bii is sort of new. But I do like seeing his relationship with Yang Na Na (Katie Chen). It was extremely awkward to watch them at first but I think it got a lot better and it’s quite sweet.
It’ been a few episodes since I last wrote and things have really started to kick off in the drama. Du Zi Feng has more or less admitted his feelings for Ya Nuo, at least to himself. Same goes with Ya Nuo. I really enjoy the lack of a rival for Ya Nuo, it makes everything more comfortable to watch.
Anyway so Zi Feng finally found his father who lost is memory after surviving a shipwreck years before the beginning of the drama. I suspect Wu Han Sheng (Wang Jia Liang) had something to do with the whole incident. It would explain why Han Sheng is so paranoid about Zi Feng’s father faking his amnesia or remembering anything.
Du Zi Feng’s relationship with Ya Nuo has definitely become VERY intimate. Sometimes I suspect he already knows shes a girl. When Ya Nuo is around Zi Feng she acts especially feminine and it’s funny how Zi Feng never questions it. I wonder how long the secret will be kept. I was thinking that Zi Feng will openly find out before her twenty six birthday and the “danger” that the fortune teller predicted will be Han Sheng. Who knows though, that’s just my prediction.
I’m not a film major or anything but one thing I’ve noticed is that some parts of the drama are quite carelessly edited. I hope they improve in this area because it’s a shame for such an enjoyable drama to become a little lacking due to poor editing. One thing they should be very careful about is dragging the drama. A lot of good dramas are spoiled in the end because of endless dragging. Anyway I’m looking forward to the future episodes!
I finally finished this drama! The ending overall was good, no one died. I was seriously expecting Na Na to pass away because of her disease. I was also expecting for the drama to drag on like maybe one or two more episodes where Zi Feng is trying to come to terms with the fact Ya Nuo is a girl. Luckily (I guess?) the writer spared us from that, apparently Zi Feng had known for awhile that Ya Nuo was a girl so the last part of the drama was a bit anticlimactic. The way Zi Feng found out Ya Nuo was a girl was also really anticlimactic, they could have made it for memorable or something. He should have suspected it when Ya Nuo’s imaginary little sister suddenly went out of the picture.
They could have also done more with the fact that Ya Nuo had to live as a man until 26. Like Zi Feng should have been the deal breaker that causes something to happen that’s related to Ya Nuo’s fortune. Because nothing in the story really related to it, it’s like they just mixed some random excuse for a gender bender drama which is unfortunate cause ever thing else was pretty good.
I really like how understanding Ya Nuo and Zi Feng are with each other throughout the whole drama. Normally there’s always a series of misunderstandings between the two leads. Bii improved a lot throughout the whole drama. I think he may have good potential as an actor, but I do think his high, nasally voice might be a disadvantage for him in his acting career, unlike his music one. On another note, Wang Jia Liang who was Han Sheng needs to step it up. I’ve seen him in other dramas and he was pretty good, I don’t know what happened this time in Bromance. Sometimes I wish the love triangle was between him, Ya Nuo, and Zi Feng. Like how juicy would that be!
Anyway thanks for reading! Next drama!
